Orthodontics for Children
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an examination for children by age 7 to evaluate if orthodontic treatment may be indicated some time in the future. Early evaluation of a child is extremely important and can detect orthodontic problems before they progress, and help the orthodontist to determine the best time for each patient to begin treatment if necessary. Impacted teeth (“stuck” and unable to grow into the correct position) can be detected by an early evaluation so that a less invasive treatment plan can be offered. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by age 7, so overbites, crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated to determine if interceptive treatment may be recommended.
Our office is pleased to offer a complimentary examination for new patients. Children who are not ready for orthodontic treatment are placed into our observation program, allowing Dr. Romani to monitor dental eruption and facial growth at regular intervals.
When it is necessary to begin treatment early, with her specialty training Dr. Romani can guide incoming adult teeth, as well as the growth of the jaws. Early treatment can modify the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gaining space for permanent teeth, reducing the frequency of permanent tooth extractions, and reducing the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth. Early intervention treatment can also correct thumb-sucking habits and improve abnormal swallowing, tongue thrust problems, and open obstructed airways for better breathing. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment by setting the stage for a healthy dental environment. Another important benefit for many young patients is improved self confidence and increased self-esteem, thanks to a smile they feel good about.
Orthodontics for Adults
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. Romani Orthodontics is experienced and proficient in adult orthodontics. In fact, one of every four patients in our practice is over 21. The oldest patient that we have treated to date is 82!
Dr. Romani works closely with adult patients and their dentists to deliver quality care, taking into account the special periodontal and restorative needs unique to adults. There is no age limit for orthodontic tooth movement, as long as the periodontium (gum and bone) surrounding the teeth is healthy and well maintained. Our office offers an upbeat and professional environment where adults feel comfortable during their appointments. Our highly trained team is pleased to provide encouragement and support for our patients during their journey to a new and beautiful smile.
